ELEPHANT CONSERVATION & CARE CENTRE

The Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre was established in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department to address the conservation issues of Asian elephants in Indian subcontinent. The primary objectives of the center is to eradicate illegal trafficking and holding of elephants in circus, creating a platform for public awareness about the threats faced by elephants to ensure the safety and protection of elephants in the wild life. It was established in 2008 as India's first elephant hospital at its Elephant Conservation and Care Centre to provide specialized medical treatment to sick and aged elephants. Was established in 2008 as India's first elephant hospital at its Elephant Conservation and Care Centre to provide specialized medical treatment to sick and aged elephant. It is located inside SoorSarovar bird sanctuary, 25 km outside Agra on road to Delhi. During the Mughal era, a nomadic tribe known as Kalandars started the practice of dancing sloth bears for the entertainment of the royal family members. For the last 350 years, the sloth bear had been the target of exploitation by this tribe. Ending of the Mughal regime with time created unemployment for the kalandars tribe and transitioned the dancing bear trade to cheap roadside entertainment for villagers and tourists who pay them to watch jumping of bears in pain, so this is how this dancing bear business used to run in which pain of animal becomes gain of humans.

Private Tour Guide For Agra Wildlife Sightseeing

To make them dance on the behest of kalandars, a brutal practise was prevalent among the tribe in which a hot iron poker rod is pierced across the muzzle of baby bears and a rope is inserted without giving them anaesthesia. The inserted rope was tugged to induce dance performance on demand. With the cooperation of Government officials, the Agra forest department and wildlife SOS has been able to rehabilitate more than 600 dancing sloth bears. They are living a peaceful life in four large sanctuaries across India, one of them is Agra Wildlife SOS, enjoying a life where they will never again have to bear the trauma of cruelty and pain. Agra Wildlife SOS is dedicated to the termination of the centuries-old practice of dancing bears along with roadside tourist spots, the organization SOS now runs several projects across the country focused on rescuing wildlife in distress, mitigating man-animal conflict, raising awareness, training enforcement officers, conducting scientific research and conservation studies, combating illegal wildlife poaching and trafficking and rehabilitating wildlife-dependent nomadic communities by self employing them. Wildlife SOS has a dedicated team of veterinary specialists for high-level caretaking of rescued bears. After the quarantine period, based on each bears personality, he or she is matched to a group and then moved to a large free area to live a normal life.

AGRA WILDLIFE SOS ELEPHANT CONSERVATION AND CARE CENTRE

Ivory poaching, abusive tourism, man-elephant conflict due to deforestation, manual labour, street begging, entertainment in circus and street begging are leading to persistent enslavement of elephants. Lack of awareness among humans that the survival of elephants is critical for the survival of other species on this blue planet. Agra Wildlife SOS was established in 2010 in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh with the support of the Agra forest department to protect the exploited wild elephants in India by rescuing and rehabilitating them. Once the elephant is rescued, they are quarantined for some time under the supervision of a veterinary specialist for the treatment of wounds, infections and parasites. They are given proper mental counselling to overcome the trauma they had borne during captivity and confinement. After quarantine, the rescued elephants are finally able to spend their remaining life peacefully in SOS care and conservation centre, with a nutritious diet, and best veterinary care. Their diet consists of green grass, roots, fruits, and fodder. An elephant can consume 250 kg of food per day.
